Volunteer listeners

Be the person someone needed.

I'll Listen runs on volunteer listeners: real people who show up, pay attention, and make someone feel less alone. If that sounds like you, here's what it looks like.

What the role looks like

You're not a therapist, a coach, or a crisis line. You're a trained peer who knows how to listen.

👂

Show up without an agenda

Your job is presence, not problem-solving. You listen, you reflect, you let the other person feel heard.

💬

Text or voice, on your schedule

Sessions happen through our platform. You set your availability; seekers match to you when you're on.

🛡️

Hold the safety net

You're trained to recognize when someone needs more than conversation and how to hand off to professional support with care.

Flexible, volunteer, yours to shape.

There's no fixed schedule and no minimum hours. Most listeners do two to four sessions a week. You set your availability in the app, take a break when life gets busy, and come back when you're ready.

How training works

Training takes about a week at a relaxed pace. You'll come out knowing how to hold a real conversation, not how to run a clinical intake.

Everything is free. You don't need a background in mental health or counseling. You need patience, curiosity, and a genuine interest in people.

1

Self-paced foundations

Four short modules covering active listening, reflective responses, and what not to do. Takes about three hours.

2

Live practice sessions

Two guided role-play calls with current listeners. Low-stakes, feedback-rich, and honestly pretty fun.

3

Safety certification

A focused session on recognizing crisis signals, de-escalation basics, and the handoff protocol.

4

Supported first sessions

Your first three sessions are paired with a senior listener who can step in if you need them.

What you get out of it

Volunteering works best when it's good for both sides. Here's what listeners consistently say changes for them.

You get better at listening everywhere

The skills carry over. Relationships, work, parenting — active listening changes how you show up for people.

It gives your time a clear purpose

A few hours a week. Someone on the other end who genuinely needed it. That tends to matter.

You join a community that takes this seriously

Regular check-ins, an active listener community, and ongoing training so the work stays sustainable.
